In 2016, the definition of sepsis was changed from a clinical syndrome defined by a systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) due to infection to a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated immune response to infection (formerly severe sepsis)1,2. This change is very welcome as identifies more clearly the cohort of patients who would most benefit from early treatment.
