Community first responders for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Sudden cardiac arrest is a condition in which the heart has stopped beating or is not beating efficiently enough to sustain life (Zhan 2017). It is a common health problem associated with high mortality (Huang 2014). Although cardiac arrest occurs both in and out of hospital, this review will focus on cardiac arrest that occurs outside the hospital setting, as this problem poses a unique challenge for emergency medical services (EMS) operating in the community.
